’s March Madness: Round 1

We need to make sure every brand has a fair chance in our March Madness competition, so we have put together some information on the history of each brand…  May the best team win!  (Don’t forget to cast your votes for each region below.)

Pastene is North America’s oldest importer of premium Italian packaged goods. It began as a push cart operation in Boston’s North End in 1848. Pastene has the distinction of being one of North America’s oldest continuously operated family businesses. To date, Pastene has been owned and operated by descendants of Luigi and Pietro Pastene

In 1924 a small company took root in the rich farmlands of rural Pennsylvania now known as Hanover Foods. Its only business was the seasonal canning of locally-grown vegetables. Today this Company has become the largest fully-integrated independent food processor in the United States, producing over 40 million cases per year of food products.

When her mother began making homemade noodles for several local grocers, Esther Miller discovered a passion for Mrs. Millers Homemade. In 1973 Esther ventured into her own noodle-making endeavor. The business is located in Fredericksburg, Ohio, a small village in Ohio’s Amish Country.

Open Pit was introduced in Detroit in 1953 as a classic tangy BBQ sauce to liven up family meals. Over the past few decades, Open Pit has expanded throughout the Midwest where it has become a family favorite and market leader.

Texas Pete was founded in 1946.  Over the years the ”four Garners”, as they were known, produced a number of food products, including a complete line of jams and jellies, horse radish and other items. They came up with a number of products under the Texas Pete brand name to complement their popular hot sauce. 

The mayonnaise recipe, Duke’s is still made in Greenville, South Carolina. Mrs. Duke’s kitchen has been replaced by a modern production facility that turns out 240 jars of mayonnaise a minute

In 1971 the first Starbucks opens. The name comes from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, a classic American novel about the 19th century whaling industry. The seafaring name seems appropriate for a store that imports the world’s finest coffees to the cold, thirsty people of Seattle.
